Antoñito and Jordi Masip extend their stays

Following the contract extension of Kiko Olivas earlier this week, Real Valladolid’s defence was further boosted by the news that right-back Antoñito and goalkeeper Jordi Masip have both signed extended deals.

Defender Antoñito, who joined the club in 2017, will remain at the José Zorrilla until 2021. He featured in 30 matches this season and one of his highlights was scoring the only goal at the Benito Villamarín against Real Betis in October 2018, when he capped a fine flowing move by turning in Toni Villa’s cross. This match proved his versatility as he played in the right midfield position, allowing him to play in front of captain Javi Moyano at right-back to add some defensive cover while also facilitating the ability to attack on the counter, as the goal so adequately proved.

Masip was one of the central figures in Real Valladolid securing their status as a Primera club last season. He kept nine clean sheets and became renowned for his penalty-saving exploits, keeping out three of the eight he faced. This included a crucial save in September, away at Villarreal, when he denied Gerard Moreno in the 83rd minute to secure a 1-0 win. He also kept out Lionel Messi’s second penalty at the Nou Camp in February, returning to the ground to play for the first time since leaving the Catalan club. His numerous heroics earned him notoriety around the league, and alerted several bigger clubs, so seeing him sign a new deal until 2022 will be a great relief to everyone connected with the club.
