Gassama inks deal then loaned to Fuenlabrada

In a move which was somewhat overshadowed by the announcement of Hatem Ben Arfa as a new Real Valladolid player, the team captured the signature of Sekou Gassama from Almería on a deal until 2024, before immediately loaning him out to Fuenlabrada for the remainder of the campaign.

Born in Granollers on 6th May 1995, Gassama has Senegalese citizenship and began his youth career at nearby Barcelona, before moving onto Damm and then Almería. From there he broke into the Rojiblancos B team, then made the switch to Real Valladolid Promesas in July 2014 but terminated his contract and moved to Rayo Vallecano B.

Over subsequent seasons, he turned out for Bergantiños, Badalona and Sant Andreu in Catalonia before returning to Almería B. He was promoted to the first team in July 2018 and had scored 9 goals in 30 appearances for the Rojiblancos senior outfit in the Segunda, having spent a brief stint at Valencia CF Mestalla on loan.

The 6-foot 2 inch striker has enjoyed a fruitful campaign in Spain’s second tier, scoring 6 goals and registering an assist in 14 matches with the Andalusian side, along with earning the September player of the month accolade. He had also attracted the attention of teams such as Queens Park Rangers in England and fellow-Segunda side Real Zaragoza as he had helped fire Almería to the top of the table prior to last weekend’s round of matches.

Gassama was immediately assigned to Fuenlabrada in the Segunda, who currently sit in fifth in the table and are very much part of the promotion playoff picture. Fuenlabrada are eight points behind second-placed Almería and visit the Estadio Juegos Mediterráneos in less than a month to face off against Gassama’s former side.
